A Westby Police Department investigation solved a crime Thursday night that had raised the ire of many local residents n vandalism at the city’s beloved Davidson Park.

The vandalism included spray-painted “gang-type” graffiti on a number of facilities and rocks at the park and damage inside the park’s restroom. Police were informed of the vandalism on Sunday.

“A tip led to a search warrant and that led to a video tape,” Westby Police Chief Mitch Hundt said. “It’s kids, two 16-year-olds, and that’s what we thought in the first place.”

Hundt said the police department had asked the Westby Times to prominently cover the vandalism case in its edition this week to bring public attention to the matter. The Westby Times responded with front page photos and a story. He said the partnership with the newspaper was a success.

Davidson Park is the site of Westby’s weekly gathering in the summer called “Hamburgers in the Park” where various musical groups perform for entertainment while people eat hamburgers and visit under the shade of tall trees. The park is home to an unusual natural formation of boulders and a playground.

While the graffiti was gang-style, Hundt said there is no significant gang activity in Westby, characterizing the act as that of gang wannabe youths.

“There’s no real numbers or means for them to organize,” Hundt said.

Because those involved are juveniles, the matter will be handled by juvenile authorities.

Punishment Should Fit the Crime wrote on May 12, 2008 9:38 AM:

" These "children" as people are calling them, are 16 years old, not six. This was violent, deliberate, willful destruction of property promoting gang activity. In less than 2 short years, these "children" will be adults. They need to be responsible for the complete cost and labor of restoring this park (including cleaning up the feces that they spread around in the bathrooms.) As I'm sure most of this has been done already, then they can clean up other similar messes. In addition, many hours of community service and a lengthy probation are in order. It is a well-known fact that juvenile offenders who are allowed to get away with crimes with very little punishment often have their crimes escalate to the point where innocent people are hurt.

This is not a "simple" act of vandalism. It is not "only" destroying a beautiful family park enjoyed by the many families in the community, which in itself is serious. These "almost adults" have proven that they idolize the behavior of gangs, whose "creeds" are unprovoked brutality and murder. You have to wonder if these kids have already been in trouble with minor offenses that were allowed to go unsupervised and unpunished until it escalated to this point.

Now is the time to stop this before it escalates. I would not assume that Westby is too small to ever have a gang problem. I moved from an area that claimed the same thing. Within 10 short years, it was not safe to be outside at night in your own yard, as well as skyrocketing incidents of home invasions. Although I agree that it is difficult to ever imagine Westby being in the same situation, I don't believe we should take vandalism OR gang activity too lightly. "

" its a shame but things happen no one or ones kids are perfect. I spent much of my childhood in that park and have a lot of good memories from it. I have not been there in years but want to being my kids there before they are to old so they can at least experience a but of it, but Kansas City is a long way from home... "
