Nick Midtlien wins two state titles; headed for nationals (2008/07/03)
At the age of 17, Nick Midtlien of Chaseburg never dreamed he’d be heading to the National High School Rodeo Championship in New Mexico on July 20-26, but after a banner showing at the Wisconsin High School Rodeo Finals in Richland Center two weeks ago, he can stop wishing and start preparing to represent the state in both the bull riding and bareback riding competitions.

CV Board blasted for publicly reading letter (2008/07/03)
Coon Valley resident Sonja Pederson blasted the Coon Valley Board, during public discussion of the village board’s June monthly meeting, for publicly reading resident Jean Sims letter, in what she believed was a poor display of public leadership and an outright act to ridicule a community resident. Pederson asked the board why they felt the need to publicly read the letter, instead of contacting Sims directly and discussing her immediate village board concerns.

Anderson’s hosting VC Holstein Twi-light meeting (2008/07/03)
Rob and Kari Anderson of rural Westby will be hosting the annual Vernon County Holstein Twi-light Meeting on Friday, July 11. The Andersons reside on a century-old farm at S1415 Lovaas Ridge Road with their three children, 8-year-old Lucas, 6-year-old Karly and 14-month-old Link.

Coon Valley Area Business Association formed (2008/06/30)
Businesses in and around the village of Coon Valley are in the process of re-forming a business association, which has been inactive for 10 years. The thought of revitalizing the business association was sparked during conversations by members of Coon Valley Farmer’s Telephone as they prepared to hold a second annual customer appreciation picnic and wanted to expand the successful event to incorporate all Coon Valley area businesses, not just the phone company, that initially held the event in 2007 to honor 100 years of business in Coon Valley.

Ak Lallas hangs up his teaching hat after 32 years (2008/06/30)
Legally his name is Soterios Lallas, but to students and staff in the Westby Area School District he’s “Ak” or the singing birthday banshee to people in the school lunchroom. After 32 years as an educator, Ak Lallas disconnected his Smart Board, and hung up his mouse when he retired at the end of the 2007-08 school years.

Alm sentenced for armed robbery in Viroqua, Westby burglary (2008/06/30)
A Sparta man pleaded guilty, Tuesday, in Vernon County Circuit Court to felony counts of being party to armed robbery and burglary and was sentenced to four years in prison.

At the age of 94, Elva Thomas was definitely in the pink after her loving family delivered 94 pink roses to her at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby for her birthday on May 30. Thomas was especially grateful to be able to stop and smell her huge bouquet of roses after doctors informed her family only weeks earlier that the beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother had only days to live after suffering a heart attack on April 18.

School district surround care lagging in numbers (2008/05/22)
The Westby Area Board of Education voted in March to move forward with a plan to offer surround care for children age four to 4th grade as a way of increasing their enrollment through the implementation of a child-care program for parents struggling with ways to get their school-age children enrolled in the school districtwide 4K early childhood program to the half-day classroom sessions when they work out of town.

Vandals strike Westby’s Davidson Park (2008/05/12)
On Sunday, May 4, the Westby Police Department was dispatched to Davidson Park for reported vandalism to the restroom and shelter house facilities along with the park’s scenic historic rocks. Upon arrival Officer Matt White found the lock on the men’s restroom door was broken, the door had been kicked in and feces smeared around the facilities.
