City officials, residents and travelers through the city of Westby should rejoice after Westby Public Works Director Gregg Hanson announced on March 2 that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) has agreed to redo Main Street this summer.

The Westby Times was recently contacted regarding possible cougar sighting near the Westby city limits. Concerned citizens reported seeing two cougars just west of the city limits in the town of Christiana. Reporting parties also claim the cougars were chased from living dwellings by family dogs.

Snowflake’s Friday night lights spark love and loads of fun for spectators (2010/02/12)
The 87th annual Westby Snowflake Ski Jumping tournament held Feb. 5-6 is in the record books. The historic event took on a new look in 2010 when club members voted to turn the ski jump into an evening under the lights extravaganza on Friday, Feb. 5, the first day of the tournament, which proved successful drawing an estimated crowd of 3,300 curiosity seekers and many area residents who hadn’t attended the ski jumping tournament for years.

Harris Bank to close Chaseburg branch (2010/02/12)
Harris Bank officials informed its customers in December that it will permanently close the Chaseburg branch office on March 12. According to Rachel Gerds, Communications Manager for Harris Bank, the decision to close the Chaseburg branch was difficult, but Harris Bank is committed to making the transition as easy as possible.

CCFA inches closer to new fire station (2010/02/08)
In January, the Coon Village Board unanimously agreed to rezone the lot the village recently sold to the Coon Creek Fire Association (CCFA). The Coon Valley Village Board acted on the recommendation during its Jan. 12 regular monthly board meeting moving the CCFA one step closer in their development process of a new six-bay fire station being constructed in Coon Valley.

87th Snowflake Ski Jump to light up the valley this weekend (2010/02/05)
A new twist will highlight the 87th annual Snowflake Ski Jumping Tournament this weekend after Snowflake Ski and Golf Club officials and booster club members decided to venture down a path never taken holding a night jump, on Friday, Feb. 5, and a day jump on Saturday, Feb. 6, with no Sunday festivities.

Karen Swenson of Westby never minded being referred to as the “Dinosaur Lady” by some of her fellow employees at Harris Bank, where she’s retiring from on Jan. 29. After all, at the age of 63, Swenson has been employed at the bank for 44 years and survived it changing ownership four times during her tenure.

Surround care may end at Westby site (2010/01/22)
The news wasn’t good for the current surround care participants at Westby Elementary School who may lose the service due to low participation, while the Coon Valley Elementary School program remains strong with near capacity numbers.

Frosty and fun at Chaseburg Trail Days (2010/01/22)
The 40th annual Chaseburg Trail Days was blessed with pleasant temperatures and a glorious turnout for all the festivities. Despite warming temperatures, the snowmobile trails remained open, allowing riders the joy of cruising over the river, through the woods, across the ridges and back into the valleys to all the outlying communities participating in the annual poker run on Friday evening and Saturday.

Even after massive flash flooding in 2007 wiped out a large portion of Lower Chaseburg, forced families to relocate and left businesses closed, Chaseburg residents remain committed to survival and staying close knit.
